The significance of denture identification and marking has long been accredited by dental professionals. Denture labeling or marking is crucial for medico legal investigation and social reasons like early identification of the dead and injured people in the event of major disasters such as earthquakes, floods, plane crashes, and accidents. Moreover, loss of dentures or confusion in recognition of denture is not uncommon; especially during cleaning by the paramedical staff in clinical premises. [1] The loss is of greater consequence to the elderly patient for whom new dentures is difficult to adapt. A variety of denture marking systems has been reported in the literature and is normally divided into surface marking or inclusion methods. The surface marking methods comprise engraving the cast model, writing on the denture surface, scribbling on dentures, whereas the inclusion methods include integration of microchips, bar-coded tags, lenticular cards, and radio-based tagging transponders into the dentures. The various locations where bar codes can be integrated are palatal segment of the maxillary denture, external posterior buccal surface of the denture, and lingual flange of the mandibular denture. [2],[3] For denture bar-coding several software are available that can facilitate computer based electronic encoding of patient's information and produce an analogous bar code. The characteristic bar-code illustration represents general data such as name, age, sex, address, occupation, phone number, and nationality of the patient. It can be used in complete dentures, removable partial dentures, fixed partial dentures and maxillofacial prosthesis as a routine procedure. [4] The labeling or marking object incorporated on the prostheses preferably should not be nonmetallic as it cannot withstand high temperatures of denture processing. Additionally, the surfaces of the labels should not be affected by daily routines performed by the patient and must be smooth and polished to prevent plaque formation and assist in hygiene maintenance. This letter is an endeavor to draw an attention towards the imperative role of denture labeling or marking that can assist medico legal issues related to forensic investigations. I hope it will prove to be a gentle nudge to guide researchers in this direction.
